Abortion in Islam is a Forbidden (Haram) act, and if abortion is done by a Muslim then Muslims’ should pay Diyah (blood money). In Quran it clearly explained that killing of innocent human being is haram except in the cause of defense or battle.

Islamic views on abortion are abortion is wrong and haram (prohibited), yet many acknowledge that it might be allowed in specific cases.

All Scholars of Muslim law acknowledge that abortion in Islam is allowed if proceeding with the pregnancy would put the mother’s life in genuine threat. This is the main reason acknowledged for fetus removal following 120 days of the pregnancy.

Various schools of Muslim law hold distinctive perspectives on whether whatever other purposes behind abortion is allowed, and at what phase of pregnancy assuming this is the case.

A few schools of Muslim law allow abortion in the initial 16 weeks of pregnancy, while others just allow it in the initial 7 weeks.

Notwithstanding, even those scholars  who might allow early fetus removal in specific cases still see abortion as wrong, yet don’t view it as a culpable off-base. The more aged the pregnancy, the great wrong.

The Glorious Qur’an does not unequivocally allude to abortion but rather offers direction on related matters. Scholars acknowledge that this direction can legitimately be connected to fetus removal (abortion).

What is Abortion?

Abortion is also called as termination of Pregnancy. While a woman having pregnancy using some medical methods they terminating the pregnancy .In early pregnancy days using pills and after 15 weeks using surgical abortion takes place.

Abortion is the process of terminating pregnancy or fetus before it can make due outside the uterus. A fetus removal which happens suddenly is otherwise called a miscarriage.

The abortion is takes place by either Medical Abortion or with Surgical Abortion. Medical Abortion is takes place at the initial stages of pregnancy by taking some pills. And surgical abortion takes place at any age.Abortion in islam

In Muslim’s view they believe that the Fetus is to become a living soul after 4 months of pregnancy. So some scholars debate on this topic that doing abortion in Islam at that point is wrong.

Abortion in Islam:

Abortion in islam

In the view of Islam Abortion and birth control is balanced. Islam allows any woman to prevent pregnancy but it forbids them to terminate pregnancy. If the case like a woman raped then that woman can use pills immediately after the sexual assault in order to prevent the pregnancy.

Islamic sharia allows abortion only when the doctor declares that the pregnancy may cause problem to Mother’s life. This permission is based on the principle of al-ahamm wa ‘l-muhimm which means the lesser important and the more important.

The Messenger of Allah said that if two forbidden thing come upon the person together, then that person should sacrifice the lesser for the greater.

As above mentioned Doctors case, the woman faced two forbidden acts together as either abort (Terminate the pregnancy) the unborn child or let a living woman die.

Obviously, the Woman’s life is greater than the unborn child’s life. So here abortion is allowed.

Many Muslims argue that abortion is allowed when the fetus is below 120 days. And they quote a hadith from the Prophet (SAW) follows.

Abdullah ibn Masood (May Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) narrated to us: Verily, each of you is brought together in his mother’s abdomen for forty days in the form of a drop of fluid. Then it is a clinging object for a similar [period]. Thereafter, it is a lump looking like it has been chewed for a similar [period]. The angel is then sent to him and he breathes into him the spirit. He is also commanded to issue four decrees: to record his sustenance, his life span, his deeds and [whether he will be] unhappy [by entering Hell] or happy [by entering Paradise]. Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 55, Number 549

Some Scholar’s opinion is that peoples understanding this hadith wrongly, that before the Ruh is blown into the fetus at 120 days, this fetus is not a living thing and for this abortion is not meant as killing at this stage.

So they think that the fetus is not a living entity that means at the age of 120 days below abortion is allowed.

Some Scholar’s argue with this that if the fetus age is above 120 days or below 120 days the abortion is Haram without any valid Reason in the sense of medical situation threatens the life of the mother as doctor said.

Different Scholars have different views on the topic “Abortion in Islam”. Their opinion is based on some conditions as follows.

Saving Mother’s Life:

Islam clearly says that the mother has a priority while the chances occur to select one life. If any conditions occur like for Example say the fetus or the baby inside the womb may cause any damage to mother’s life then abortion is not wrong.

This condition is based on

  • The mother is the “originator” of the baby.
  • The mother’s life is entrenched.
  • The mother has with obligations and duties.
  • The mother is a piece of a family
  • If Mother’s life is in danger in some conditions the bab’s life also in danger.

For Child’s sake:

In the event that it is confirmed in the early stages of pregnancy that an embryo experiences an imperfection that can’t be dealt with and that will bring about incredible enduring to the child, various researchers would state that it is reasonable to abort it, provide that the pregnancy is not more than 120 days old.

A somewhat more liberal assessment is that abortion in the initial 120 days would be allowed if a child would be conceived with such physical and mental distortion as would deny the offspring of an ordinary life. The feeling of no less than two equipped restorative pros is required.

Different researchers differ and hold that fetus removal (abortion in Islam) is not allowed in such cases.

There is practically consistent feeling that following 120 days a fetus removal is not passable unless the deformity in the incipient organism puts the mother’s life in threat.

In case of Rape or Illegal Pregnancy:

A few Scholars express that fetus removal where the mother is the victim of Rape or of inbreeding is reasonable in the initial 120 days of the pregnancy.

Others say Abortion in Islam for such reasons is never allowed.

Quran about Abortion:

Here are some verses From Quran which describes Abortion in Islam is forbidden.

Allah says in the Glorius Quran Surah 6 and Verse 151:

Translation

Say, “Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, And do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.” [ Glorious Quran 6:151]

Allah says in the Glorious Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 140:

قَدْ خَسِرَ الَّذِينَ قَتَلُوا أَوْلَادَهُمْ سَفَهًا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَحَرَّمُوا مَا رَزَقَهُمُ اللَّهُ افْتِرَاءً عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ قَدْ ضَلُّوا وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ

Translation

Most surely they became losers, who, in their folly and ignorance killed their own children; and made unlawful what Allah had provided them as sustenance, falsely ascribing prohibitions to Allah. Surely, they went astray and were not at all rightly guided.

Allah says in the Glorious Quran Chapter 17 Surah Israa verse 31:

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَاقٍ ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُهُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْئًا كَبِيرًا

Translation

Do not kill your children for fear of want; for it is we who provide for them, and for you as well. Indeed, their killing is a great crime!

Translation

When one of them gets a baby girl, his face becomes darkened with overwhelming grief.[Glorious Quran Chapter:16 Verse:58]

Translation

Ashamed, he hides from the people, because of the bad news given to him. He even ponders: should he keep the baby grudgingly, or bury her in the dust. Miserable indeed is their judgment.[Glorious Quran Chapter:16 Verse:59]

(The Above two ayahs Describing that the previous nations peoples gets disappointed when they got baby girls.)

What is Diyah (Blood money)?

The Diyah is the responsibility or ransom of the person who was in charge of leading the abortion.

If The Doctor wish to perform through an operation or by injecting medication into the mother and with this act of his, the child was aborted then the doctor is responsible.

If a Woman herself wish to eat some pills to abort prescribed by doctors then the Woman would be responsible.

If father didn’t know about anything about this taking place then the Diyah to be paid to him.

If Father knew all this and he approved of it then the Diyah is responsible for both Father and mother.

Hadith’s on Abortion:

Following are the Some of Authentic Hadiths which describes that Abortion in Islam is forbidden and from these Authentic Hadiths you can get idea about why abortion in Islam is haram.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him): Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) gave the judgment that a male or female slave should be given in Qisas for an abortion case of a woman from the tribe of Bani Lihyan (as blood money for the fetus) but the lady on whom the penalty had been imposed died, so the Prophets ordered that her property be inherited by her offspring and her husband and that the penalty be paid by her Asaba. { Hadith—Sahih al-Bukhari 8.732,}

Narrated Mughira ibn Shu’ba (May Allah be pleased with him): Umar bin Al-Khattab asked (the people) about the Imlas of a woman, i.e., a woman who has an abortion because of having been beaten on her abdomen, saying, “Who among you has heard anything about it from the Prophet (peace be upon him)?” I said, “I did.” He said, “What is that?” I said, “I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, ‘Its Diya (blood money) is either a male or a female slave.'” Umar said, “Do not leave till you present witness in support of your statement.” So I went out, and found Muhammad bin Maslama. I brought him, and he bore witness with me that he had heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, “Its Diya (blood money) is either a male slave or a female slave.”

Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him): Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him):  said: “Umar asked about the decision of the Prophet (peace be upon him) about that (i.e. abortion) Haml ibn Malik ibn an-Nabighah got up and said: I was between two women. One of them struck another with a tent-pole killing both her and what was in her womb. So the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave judgment that the blood-wit for the unborn child should be a male or a female slave of the best quality and that she should be killed.”
